Phantom Thread

2017 ‐ Paul Thomas Anderson

In this film set in 1950s London, Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) is a renowned dressmaker whose fastidious life is disrupted by a young, strong-willed woman, Alma (Vicky Krieps), who becomes his muse and lover. Phantom Thread already has won two Golden Globes, for actor Day-Lewis and the score, and is nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, score, directing and supporting actress Lesley Manville. A significant question, hanging by another thread, is whether this will be patrons’ last look at Day-Lewis onscreen, who has announced his retirement. “If this is indeed the end for Day-Lewis, it is a fitting final bow,” says the Detroit News. “It's a treat to watch him drink your milkshake one last time.” “This is a perverse and elegantly wrought romance, as well as an evocative period piece,” says the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, “unpredictable from beginning to deliciously Hitchcockian end.”
