In I, Tonya, competitive ice skater Tonya Harding rises among the ranks at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, but her future in the sport is thrown into doubt when her ex-husband intervenes. For some patrons, it’s a look back in sport history—through the lens of a triple Oscar nominated film. Best Actress Oscar contender Margot Robbie, who played alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street as well as in Tarzan and Suicide Squad, plays Tonya. Nominated as Best Supporting Actress, Allison Janney, former West Wing actress, Golden Globe, Emmy and Screen Actors Guild winner is transformed as Tonya’s mother. The film also was Oscar-nominated for its editing. “This remarkable movie-factual and funny, always surprising and unconventionally written, directed and acted, sets the record straight with an adrenalin rush that overwhelms the senses,” declares the New York Observer. “Destroyed yet defiant, Robbie walks the emotional tightrope of the most fabulously, tragically American film of the year,” says Time Out. “Impressive in its own right, I, Tonya offers an antidote to those feel-good films about innately noble athletes who manage to triumph over impossible odds,” says the Wall Street Journal.
