Fiddler: A Miracle of Miracles

Rating: PG-13

Genre: Documentary

Duration: 92

Before Fiddler on the Roof became a Broadway classic and cultural touchstone, it was just a pretty bad idea,” says the New York Times. “Who wants to see a musical about a Russian milkman marrying off his daughters before a pogrom? One of the many virtues of the celebratory documentary Fiddler: A Miracle of Miracles is how it transports you to this early, nerve-racking gestation period.”

“Fiddler deals with universal themes of parenting, marriage, bigotry, faith, individual struggle and communal identity,” observes Variety. “There’s considerable pleasure to be had here, particularly in the interweaving of several decades’ performance clips in various staging styles and languages. … Seeing TV variety-show bits in which Danny Kaye introduces Topol to American audiences, or the Temptations cover If I Were a Rich Man, suggests that there’s a giant treasure trove of Fiddler errata out there whose surface this film barely scratches.”
