Revisit or be introduced to an uplifting international gem that captures the indomitable human spirit. The three-time Oscar winning film has been nominated for over 50 awards and is considered among the 25 top-rated movies of all time by International Movie Data Base users.

Directed by and starring Roberto Benigni, this film captures the indomitable human spirit. The 1997 Italian film (with English subtitles) shares the story of a gentle Jewish-Italian waiter Guido (writer-director-star Roberto Benigni), and a schoolteacher named Dora (Nicoletta Braschi). They meet, fall in love and have a son (Giorio Cantarini). Their happiness is abruptly halted, however, when Guido and his son are separated from Dora and taken to a concentration camp during the Holocaust. Determined to shelter his son from the horrors of his surroundings, Guido convinces him that their time in the camp is merely a game.

The film, says the New York Times, “dares to laugh in the face of the unthinkable. And because Benigni can be heart-rending without a trace of the maudlin, it works.”

“Its sentiment is inescapable,” says the Los Angeles Times, “but genuine poignancy and pathos are also present, and an overarching sincerity is visible too.”
